On Thursday 17 February, the annual Whitefriars House Athletics Carnival took place at Bill Sewart Athletics Track, and it promised to be one of the best yet. The day began with the College gathering as a community to celebrate with the Welcome to Country and a prayer.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, everyone retreated to their House areas and watched closely as the first events (1500 metres and Hurdles) began, hoping for a prized blue ribbon to make its way back to their House. As the day progressed, it became clear that it was going to be a tight contest, with many houses in contention to win the overall trophy.
The last lot of events, the 4×100 metre relays, required a united team effort and the last opportunity to bring valuable points to your House, and they were watched with high anticipation. As a tradition, the Tom Kelly Fastest Friar was the last event of the day, a 100-metre sprint between the fastest twelve individuals across all year levels.
After all the events had concluded, everyone waited for the points to be tallied and presentations to begin. Reigning champs Soreth were looking good to go back-to-back with some excellent results throughout the day. However, it was the mighty Avila that took out the overall House carnival trophy, much to the delight of their House Leader Mr Tom Stafford.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, with an event or activity for everyone, and it was great to see so much determination and spirit on display. Lastly, a huge thank you to all the staff that contributed throughout the day and the sports department for making this day possible and allowing for it to run as smoothly as it did.
