On Monday 17 September, 9 students from Years 7-10, attended the Xavier College Secondary Open Chess Tournament. Cohosted and attended by elite schools including Melbourne High, Balwyn High and PLC; we each played 7 games, with matchups
scaled to be against other players with the same current score.
Our ten players were split into two teams; meaning a few Whitefriars boys ended up playing against each other. Lots of our opponents were very skilled and played extremely well. One of our teams came fourth place and another finished equal eighth,
which was impressive considering the calibre of our opposition.
As a result of our fourth place, we will be going to the State Competition in October. It was a great team effort and everybody played some thrilling games, especially Ethan Hooi who finished with five wins and a draw, (the draw breaking the first placed player’s perfect run).
