Whitefriars scores spot in DAV Debating playoffs!

On Wednesday 7 August, our A Grade and D Grade debating teams battled for the top spot of the Ringwood Region.

The A Grade team, led by Alex Vander, Mark Uhlenbruch and Joel Duggan spoke brilliantly on the topic ‘that environmental groups should focus on one company or issue at a time’. The boys had only one hour to prepare their speeches as the negative team, and crafted some excellent and entertaining arguments, full of analogies and pop-culture references. They were unfortunately pipped at the post by Vermont Secondary College and finished second on the ladder. A commendable effort!

The D Grade team, led by Evan O’Connor, Joshua Adams and Ben Smith were tasked with the topic of ‘that refugees should have full access to the Australian Welfare System’. Having crafted an impressive model as the affirmative team, with excellent scope to why we should provide refugees with the help and support they deserve, the boys came out on top, defeating Yarra Valley Grammar and were awarded the title of the top ranked team in the D Grade Competition. This group will be moving onto the DAV finals ‘playoffs’ as the representatives for Ringwood.

As the debating co-ordinator, I am sincerely thankful for the dedication and willingness shown by all the students who have participated in the DAV Debating Competition this year. The students have worked collaboratively, invested a lot of time and energy into developing their speeches, and have represented the College in a respectful and admirable manner.
