On Monday 14 October, five Year 7-10 boys went to Brighton Grammar with Ms Powling for the State Secondary School Chess Finals. Whitefriars were up against the best schools in the state and it was going to be tough for any of the boys to pull out many wins. Across the day, the Whitefriars boys played eight games each, where they were matched up against players who were on the same, or similar win/loss ratio. At the end of the day Whitefriars finished 9th overall out of 35 schools. Everyone played great games and all learnt some valuable information for future tournaments. This year, Whitefriars gained its best result in the State Finals and all players, who had participated in previous State Finals, improved their match results. A special mention and big thank you to Ms Rhonda Powling for running chess club all year and supporting the chess boys.
Well done to our State Finals Chess team: Jayden Bardrick, Lucas D’Costa, Alex Boscariol, Simon D’Costa and Hayden Menzies.
