A group of Year 11 students approached the Sustainability and Environment Team (SET) to request a compost bin for the group to use in the school yard. The other student compost bin was on the other side of the school. SET were encouraged by this student led initiative and supported the students to develop a proposal that included type of compost bin, ownership, compost induction and pledging to maintain and show other students of the benefits of composting. The proposal was then presented to the Leadership Team, who approved the project.
Today the cone compost bin arrived. SET and the boys worked out the best location based on sunlight, lack of cables and tree roots and well-drained soil. The students will dig a hole and install it themselves. Once installed, the cone compost bin will break down all their food waste, including meat and dairy without the maintenance of regular turning and adding carbon-based items. The nutrients will go straight into the ground.
SET are proud of this group, who are keen to create sustainable habits that reduces greenhouse gases on a daily basis.
