Soreth ends thirty-one year Athletics drought

On Thursday 20 February, the annual Whitefriars House Athletics Carnival took place at Tom Kelly Athletics Track – promising to be one of the best yet.

The day began with the College gathering as a community to celebrate with the Acknowledgement Of Country and a prayer. At the conclusion of the ceremony, everyone joined their House areas and watched closely as the first events (1500 metres and Hurdles) began, hoping for a prized blue ribbon. As the day progressed, it became clear that it was going to be a tight contest, with many Houses in contention to win the overall trophy.

The last lot of events, the 4×100 metre relays, required a united team effort and the last opportunity for points. As a tradition, the Tom Kelly Fastest Friar was the last event of the day; a 100-metre sprint between the fastest twelve individuals across all year levels. With a competitive field ranging from Year 9s to 12s, the stage was set. It was over in a heartbeat, with Year 12 Andrea Sticca going back to back narrowly defeating Jackson Bowne (2nd) and Flynn Maguire (3rd) in a time of 11.27s.

Trinity and Avila were the favourites of the day and having held pole position throughout the day. However, it was the mighty house of Soreth that took out the overall House carnival trophy for the first time in 31 years!

Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, with an event or activity for everyone, and so much determination and spirit on display.

I would like to send a huge thank you to all the staff that contributed throughout the day and the sports department for making this day possible and allowing for it to run as smoothly as it did.
