Congratulations to our Year 12 Valete Class of 2017

Our Year 12 students have now completed their formal time at the College.

A series of assemblies took place last week, enabling the eight Houses to recognise each Year 12 student separately. The student House leaders gave a final address that was complemented by the Head of House speech. Video presentations reminded us all of how these young, sometimes awkward, Year 7 boys grew into more confident and world-aware young men.

The final Year 12 day was on Friday of that week. This gave the opportunity for this cohort to farewell their pastoral group, have a Year 12 assembly in the Theatre and gather for a luncheon in the gymnasium. The atmosphere on the day was one of emotion, humour and goodwill. It was lovely to see the boys mix so willingly and fondly with staff.

The Valedictory Mass and Dinner (held on Tuesday evening) was an outstanding occasion for the College. It is so important for us to gather in prayer and sacrament as well as socially. Our College begins the year at the Cathedral and ends there with the Year 12 graduation. The Sofitel provided the venue for the gathering afterwards. Congratulations to our Year 12 Valete Class of 2017. You exhibited grace, character and fun as you completed your time at Whitefriars; you will be remembered fondly in the years to come.

May the Lord look upon you with great kindness on your journey.

The College Captaincy roles for 2018 have been finalised. Congratulations to the following students:

Joel Monteiro, College Captain

Oscar Levi, College Vice Captain

Brendan Sammut, College Vice Captain

We look forward to witnessing the contributions of these young men along with our entire Year 12 group, as they lead our College next year.

We had three groups of students and staff who travelled during the past holiday break. Our Global Minds Tour to the USA, the Italian Trip to Imperia and the Timor-Leste Immersion all gave the boys the opportunity to broaden their view of the world. So much is to be gained by travelling in a safe group and yet experiencing life well beyond what we are used to in our own settings. All of our students acquitted themselves extremely well.

Our Community is aware that Mr Bird (our Deputy Principal – Students) is re-locating to Singapore with his family. The selection process for his replacement is underway. We are confident of appointing a highly able person to the role.

Many of you will have heard of the funding arrangements that will come into place next year as the Federal Government enacts the Gonski2 model. Whitefriars, along with the majority of Eastern suburbs Catholic secondary Colleges, will have a significant decrease in funding next year. The College is committed to maintaining all of our current programs without an unusual fee increase. Any fee increase for 2018 will be in line with past practice.

Two award events have been held recently. Our inaugural Performing Arts Awards evening enables recognition of many boys in the Music and Drama field. The parent turnout was very high. Well done to the large number of boys who have demonstrated skill, tenacity and talent in this area.

The Senior Year Sports Award morning was held over a (healthy) breakfast time in the College Gymnasium. One of the most noticeable aspects of the morning was in the quality of the public speaking of the Sport Captains and the gratitude the boys had towards the staff and College as a whole.

We wish our entire Year 12 group well as they prepare for their upcoming VCE Exams or begin preparations to enter the workforce.
