Commitment to Timor-Leste

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Luke 6:20

Through the Carmelite’s Ministry in East Timor, Whitefriars College is committed to serving the people of Timor-Leste.

This commitment commenced in January 2001, when the Indonesian Province of the Carmelites asked the Australian Province to take responsibility for the work of the Order in Timor-Leste. This included a house of formation in Hera and a mission parish in the south-western village of Zumalai. Consequently, in August 2001, the Australian Carmelites formally took over responsibility of the Timor-Leste Mission. This became the Province of Australia and Timor-Leste.

As an integral part of the Carmelite family, Whitefriars is committed to the opportunities to support their work in Timor-Leste. This includes such actions as fundraising initiatives, immersion programs (Students, Staff and Old Collegians) and through the spiritual support of the wider College Community.
